Mugler, Dale H. Honors Research Fund

The Dale H. Mugler Honors Research Fund was established in honor of Dr. Dale H. Mugler by his family, colleagues, friends, and University of Akron alumni on the occasion of Dr. Mugler’s retirement as Dean of The University of Akron’s Honors College in 2015. Dr. Mugler served as Dean of the Honors College from 2005 to 2015. The Dr. Dale H. Mugler Honors Research Fund recognizes Dr. Mugler’s passion for opening doors of opportunity for undergraduate research. The description was revised in 2025, as the fund will be endowed.

Dale H. Mugler, PhD, had a distinguished career at The University of Akron from 1989 to 2015. He earned his undergraduate degree in mathematics from the University of Colorado at Boulder and his PhD in applied mathematics from Northwestern University in 1974. Before joining ¹ú²úÂ×Àí, he spent a year at Syracuse University in New York and 14 years at Santa Clara University in California, where he first began working with Honors students.

Dr. Mugler’s research achievements include a Fellowship at the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Aachen, Germany, in the early 1980s, as well as five summers conducting research at two NASA Research Centers. He holds four patents and founded a biomedical startup supported by the University of Akron Research Foundation.

When Dr. Mugler was appointed to lead the Honors Program at The University of Akron in 2000, the program was not yet a college. His dedication and vision were pivotal in transforming it into the Honors College by 2005, a milestone that continues to benefit many of the University’s top-achieving students. As dean, Dr. Mugler’s contributions were transformative. He oversaw the construction of the Honors Complex, established a study-abroad program, connected Honors students with advanced research opportunities, and even founded two a cappella music groups—an extension of his lifelong passion for music.

Dr. Mugler’s leadership and innovative efforts left an enduring legacy, shaping the Honors College into a thriving academic community and enriching the lives of countless students.

The purpose of The Dr. Dale H. Mugler Honors Research Fund is to support Williams Honors College undergraduate research projects with cash awards. The Dean of the Williams Honors College will administer the fund, select student recipients of the cash award(s), and set the amounts of the award(s) each year based on available funds. Funds used for purposes other than qualified educational expenses are reportable and may be taxable to the recipient.
